Bergero, C., Gosnell, G., Gielen, D. et al. Pathways to net-zero emissions from aviation. Nat Sustain 6, 404–414 (2023)

Objective:

  • Assess nine possible pathways to achieve net-zero direct emissions from avaition

Case:

  • Global

Methodology:

  • Carbon emission: $F = D(\frac{E}{D})(\frac{F}{E})= Def$
  • Kaya formula
  • Scenario: energy switching

Data Source: partial open

  • Carbon emission: IEA and CMP
  • Passenger demand: ICAO
  • Freight demand: world bank

Findings:

  • Without ambitious reductions in air transport demand and improvements in aircraft energy efficiency, decarbonmizing aviation will require important quantities of drop-in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF)
  • net-zero emission relies on the carbon dioxide removals (CDR)
  • High costs make fuel switching the most difficult in developing regions, where aviation demand growing the fastest
