Rentschler, J., Leonova, N. Global air pollution exposure and poverty. Nat Commun

Objective:

  • Explore the global prevalence of unsafe outdoor air pollution and the way it interacts with poverty

Case:

  • Global subnational units

Methodology:

  • Resampling

Data Source

  • PM2.5
  • Poverty index: World Bank
  • Boundaries: World Bank

Findings:

  • 7.3 million people face air pollution levels that are considered unsafe- they are exposed to annual average PM2.5 concentrations over 5 $\mu$g/m3, increasing mortaility rates by 4%
  • Low-income communities tend to be both disproportionately exposed to unsafe air pollution levels and more vulnerable to series health impacts
