Findings:
- The occurrences of kaihuang are not limited to any particular region but it is possible to find instances across the majority of provinces in China
- A total of 97.4% of the sites had undergone typical processes of rapid urbanization post-2000, and 66.7% were land that had been vacants since its demolition from rural land, 19.7% were undeveloped land that were used as construction staging areas
- Rapid urbanization is one of the leading causes
- Land use after the emergence of kaihuang showed that 24.4% have been redeloped as buildings and 5.9% as parks or green space, while 69.7% of the sites remain undeveloped never returned
- City is often decribeds as loud/continuous noise, every is expensive, foreign, and a place of struggle
