Wang, XT., Liu, H., Lv, ZF. et al. Trade-linked shipping CO2 emissions. Nat. Clim. Chang. 11, 945–951 (2021)

Objective:

  • Establish a fine-scale linkage between shipping emissions and maritime trgade, as well as the drivers behind shipping emissions

Case:

  • Global countries, Grid

Methodology:

  • Energy efficiency operational indicator (EEOI)
  • Voyage-based EEOI
  • Minimize emission

Data Source: Open

  • Ship GPS: AIS and STSD, need license
  • Trade data:
    • BACI
    • UN comtrade database
    • US census
    • Eurostat

Findings:

  • Dense shipping emissions on the circum-equatorial corridor
  • Top ten high-emissions flows collectively contribute to 17.2% of global shipping emission
  • If the total import and export volume of each commodity is left unchanged but trading partners are optimized, the global shipping CO2 emissions of international trade commodities can ideally be reduced by 38%
